Game Engine Competitive Analysis

The following is a competitive analysis I performed between 3 different free-to-use game engines available to game developers. The game engines are:

  • Unreal Engine 4

  • Unity

  • Lumberyard

Role: Sole UX Researcher

Users: Game Developers

Goal: Communicate possible users (game designers and developers) to be able to see the most commonly used characteristics c on the software, as well as a comparison to see which one might be better for them to use.

Project Overview

My Contribution

For this particular study, I performed all of the heuristic analysis and comparisons between the game engines

Goal

See the different elements that make up the Game Engines and see the strengths and weaknesses of each engine used in the analysis, and see how the design decisions made by the engine's developers can affect the users.

Process

For each of the game engines, there was an analysis of the UI, and the elements being evaluated were:

  • Content Browser

  • Object Properties

  • Layer/Object Selection

  • Visual Scripting

The analysis consisted on seeing the design principles that apply to each one of the sections in each one of the game engines, as well as compare the common trends between them and their differences.
